Resurrecting Horror: Restoration with Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration

  • Main Hall, Old Divinity School Cambridge, England, CB2 1TP United Kingdom (map)

What does it take to revive classic horror for modern audiences? Join Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how some of the most iconic horror films are restored for the screen. From preserving delicate original film stock to digital restoration and remastered soundtracks, this event reveals a hidden, and profoundly important art - the craft of film restoration.

Founded in 1934, Hammer Films has restored over 200 titles from its legendary catalogue, including The Curse of Frankenstein. The discussion is led by two of the industry’s leading restoration experts: Mark Stanborough, Head of Restoration at Hammer Films, and Anthony Badger, Head of Restoration at Silver Salt Restoration. Together, they will share rare insights into the technical challenges, creative decisions, and discoveries involved in bringing films back to life for new generations.

Anthony Badger is Head of Restoration at Silver Salt Restoration, specialising in the digital restoration of film and television. His work spans everything from silent cinema to 2000s blockbusters, as well as numerous high-end archival projects. He works closely with scanning and grading operators and with media labels and archives around the world.

Mark Stanborough has worked in the film industry for over thirty years, beginning his career at Technicolor in printing and feature colour grading. He has supervised hundreds of film remasters and restorations, including Black Narcissus, Blithe Spirit, The Ipcress File and The Curse of Frankenstein. He now manages Hammer’s film assets and oversees the restoration of its historic back catalogue.
